Layla L'obatti

Dreamcatcher

Where there are no lights, where the night sky shines with strength, where people were one with the land. I dreamt of a people once here but now echoed in the spirit world unseen. I dreamt of a web of a life, a spider that could feel our every move, where what we do on one end affects another. A world alive in heart and spirit, expressed through designs that echo the native americans and their rich history and culture that's influence still holds power today. From pieced corsets that mimic the layers of earth, to hand crotcheted webbing, and natural stone embroideries, a collection with only purest dreams emerging.

In life, sometimes things just fall into place, and that is how Layla feels about her career in design. She was first introduced to the idea of fashion design through a Mercer Island High School's technical theater class where she first heard about FIT. Her first experience with fashion was a summer in Milan at the Istituto Marangoni where she studied fashion illustration and realized that design was not just a hobby but a passion, which she has pursued ever since. Graduating in May 2007 from the Fashion Institute of Technology she has spent the last four years absorbing as much as possible from the rich cultural and technical background that FIT and New York city have to offer. Her proudest achievement is bringing together 3 years of intimate apparel students through Between the Sheets, a show that was thought up on whim and that has grown into an annual production. "Through the medium of chiffon, lace, and satin I have been a powerful tool. I can create, and to me that is the ultimate aphrodisiac, the ultimate goal, to share some internal vision with the rest of the world.
